Why We Chose Puerto Del Rey Marina

After spending several weeks bouncing around the US and British virgin islands, we decided to stop at Puerto Del Rey Marina for an little R&R. we felt the pressure of hurricane season settling in on us. It had been a couple of months since our last marina stay. We were looking for a place to dock up before taking on the 3-day passage back to the Dominican Republic. Satori needed a proper deck bath, an oil change, some major cleanout, and several months worth of provisioning.

We had thought of stopping at Marina Pescaderia again since our experience there was wonderful, but our plan was to sail west along the north coast of Puerto Rico. There are a couple of Marinas along Puerto Rico’s east coast. Puerto Del Rey Marina was the biggest. Bigger isn’t necessarily better as far as marinas go, but we knew we could accomplish everything we needed to at Puerto Del Rey.

Puerto Del Rey was also quick to replay and offer us a full weeks stay at no charge in exchange for including them in a series of social media posts. A full review and blog post was not part of the deal, but we thought it would be a great addition to the other marina reviews we have done in the past.

Puerto Del Rey Marina

On the northeast coast of Puerto Rico, you’ll find the largest marina in the Caribbean. Puerto Del Rey Marina is situated in a beautiful and naturally protected bay with a massive breakwater which has provided protection from tropical storms and hurricanes for over 25 years.

Conveniently located, the marina is very close to the islands of Culebra and Vieques, as well as the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. With space for more than 1500 boats, and accommodations for yachts up to 180 feet, this marina is a beast.

Dockage

Puerto Del Rey is equipped with a modern concrete dock system, which proved it was strong enough to withstand Hurricane Maria, which ran directly into Puerto Rico in 2017.

The Marina boasts 1000 wet slips, 400 dry-stack spaces, 50 acres of land, and can accommodate boats up to 180 feet in length.

Transient rates are very reasonable and vary with boat size. There are dock boxes and metered electrical hookups dedicated to each slip. Each slip also has a hose hookup, cable hook-up, and free wifi.

Because the marina is so big, getting to and from your slip is an effort, especially if your provisioning for your next big passage.

Thankfully, they have developed a unique golf cart shuttle system to quickly move you around the marina

This service is especially convenient when your woman decides to wear high heels to dinner.

If you’re looking for long term storage, Puerto Del Rey has a 165-ton haul out capability, 50 acres of dry storage, and a complete range of boat repair contractors on site.

This is the main haul-out facility in the area.

Puerto Del Rey Marina is a huge facility.

In addition to the haul-out and technical services, there are a number of shops and restaurants on-site including a convenience store and deli, a well-equipped marine store, Onsite car rental, inexpensive breakfast and lunch restaurant, and a lively dockside bar and restaurant with great food!

They also have well-maintained laundry machines, a gym, captains lounge, and curbside pick-up service.

The only thing this marina lacks is a pool.

Exploring and Provisioning

Old San Juan

The shops on site are good for small convenience items, but to do any kind of serious provisioning, you’ll need a rental car and at least a dedicated full day. The nearby town of Fajardo has a couple of supermarkets, but the capital city of San Juan is only a 45-minute drive.

El Yunque Rainforest

Take another day or two to explore the charming Old San Juan and the nearby rainforest of El Yunque Mountain.

Why We Recommend Puerto Del Rey Marina

Puerto Del Rey is the go-to Marina for locals living in the area and San Juan. The Marina also a convenient stopping point for cruising boats before jumping over to the Virgin Islands or heading west. The marina is massive but still manages to offer excellent customer service.

The slips and fairways are generously sized, and the golf cart shuttle service makes navigating such a large facility manageable. We would expect a marina of this caliber to have a pool, but the other onsite amenities offer many conveniences.

If you’re looking for a marina to call home or just a place to stop along the way, Puerto Del Rey Marina is certainly a good choice.
